FEVER

Sudah dalam kurun 2 minggu ini, Dylan On and Off kena fever.

Kamis malam (1/7),
suhu badannya 101.5F, dan malemnya naik 103.8F. Scarry, I was so scared that he got all the high. Habis saat bobok tubuhnya kubungkus berlembar2 baju + sweater. Pikirku, biar dia hangat, kan biasanya orang kalo meriang (panas) itu malah merasa dingin. Big mistake. It jacks up his heat. Mana setiap kali dia mulai tertidur, tiba2 tubuhnya mengejang (startled). Dan habis itu dia pasti nangis karena kaget oleh sentakan tubuhnya sendiri yang nggak terkendali.
Aduh, sedih sekali hatiku ... anak kesayanganku merana, dan aku nggak bisa apa2.
Kukasih dia Tylenol drop, .. turun suhunya, terus nggak lama naik lagi. Besoknya aku tanya Nikki, dan dia bilang it's better to keep him in the least comfortable clothes to cool him off and to give Motrin drop every 6 hours.

Jumat siang (1/8),
telpon ke Klinik, the pediatrician left already. OH, What should I do? Bring him to the hospital? The nurse told me to wait and see. Try to keep his temperature down as much as I can by giving him a lot of liquid (water or nursing). Untung dia masih mau minum water. Dan tentu saja, he constantly wants to nurse and not eat at all.

Jumat malam,
Dy nangis nggak henti2 .. suhunya 102F. Jam 3 pagi, aku udah nggak tahan, kubawa dia keluar rumah. Rasanya apartment ini terlalu panas.
Then it was, at 3 AM in the rain at 40F outside, I pushed my son in the stroller around and around the block. If he still didn't stop crying, I'd take him to the hospital. I walked in the rain, cold, singing for him, and just wish nobody would harm me at that hour. He felt asleep at the first corner. So I brought him home.

My hubby who thought I was crazy to take him out at 3 AM, drove by to the ER at 2 hospitals because he thought I would bring Dy there. Yes I'm very compulsive, especially when my son has been crying for hours. And I wouldn't let anyone stop me for doing what I thought was necessary. By 4AM he's home, checking us out. No madness, just relieved to know that our son was well asleep.

Sabtu & Minggu (1/9 & 10),
His fever still remained, but he was more active and alert. I kept giving him motrin. By Sunday, his fever was gone and he was alright.

Wednesday (1/12),
I got cold from Anton, coughing and sniffling. Oh my, we hoped that Dy didn't catch it too. We had to cancel the playdate because of it. Poor Dy, he must've been so bored staying home all the time and I ruined the chance for him to get out and play.

Saturday (1/15),
Too bad, my bad, Dy got the cold too. He had runny nose and I felt so bad everytime he wiped it off with his hand. I felt sick and tired myself. The weather had been cruel this time.

Sunday (1/16),
Dy ran a fever again, he startled again every now and then. I was worried ... It came back again, so something must be wrong.

Monday (1/17),
I called te Rina, she told me that it's better I took him to the hospital just for safety. Tara called before, she offered to take us to the hospital if I'd like to go. I said I'd wait for Anton to come home. It was around 2 PM, and I felt that Dy's getting weaker .. badannya kelihatan lemas, matanya sembab. I couldn't wait for Anton to come home. So I called the cab. We got to ER in 10 min, I called Anton on the way there. He said he'll come home now and catch us in the hosp.

ER
It took a long time just to get to first front of the service. We waited for almost an hour, Dy slept in my arm, in the waiting room full of sick people. I felt tired, I drifted to sleep. Then I felt somebody rub my hands gently. I opened my eyes and there was my husband. I was so happy to see him. He took over Dy from me. Not long after, the nurse called us. It was 3:25PM. She checked Dy's temp and asked for some complaints. Then, we're off to wait for the Registration (the insurance blablabla), and then we still had to wait to be called to the Ped ER.
So much for you thinking that ER means you'd be taken care of in 5 min, huh?

At around 4PM, we got to see the doctor (FINALLY!!).
First, his temp was taken again (rectally). It was 104.4F! He was given Tylenol. We waited. Then they did the nose culture test, blood test, and uretra test to see if there's any infection.
Uretra test
It looked pretty painful. They inserted a long tiny hose inside his penis and pushed it all the way through. I asked, what's this for? It's to get the urine and it looks painful, but it's not. It's just uncomfortable. (Ok, I believed her, I remembered they did that to me on labor). As soon as it went to a certain depth, I could see the urine flowing down the hose down to the tube.
Blood test
they poked the artery in the back of his right hand and inserted a tiny hose with head to his beautiful hand. I saw blood coming out. They connected it to a tube and put a splint inside his palm and wrapped it around with tapes. He was screaming mad and as soon as they let him go, he tried to rip it off.

We had to wait for the result for about 1-1.5 hour. Dy was given IV, I nursed him. His glistening big eyes staring at me, looking for comfort. It's okay baby, mama's here, mama's here ... you'll be okay.. I love you, you'll be fine. Anton laid his head on my shoulder. At least we're together.

All the results came negative. But his white blood count is extremely high, meaning there's an infection, they just didn't find it where. Dy's off to X-Ray. The nurse told me to stay in the room and have some meal, daddy's taking him. It was quick. Negative too. Dy's getting a shot of Antibiotic (high dose) and we have to come back in Tues and Wed for another 2 shots of ABX. Dy's cold should be treated with Dimetapp or Pediacare. And the doctor said he might not off it in weeks, the best remedy is just to give him a lot of liquid and put a cold mist humidifer in the room.

Progress
He's been well and as soon as the first shot, he didn't get fever anymore. It means the infection was caused by bacteria, not virus (as antibiotic doesn't kill virus). But he's still cranky and not eating. Crazily nursing .. and that's why I'm so exhausted (but glad to be able to nourish my son).

The weather has been extremely frigid on the 10-20F range. Everything is frozen outside. When the wind blows, it feels like razor sharp on the skin. We're all still sick from the cold, but hopefully it's going off.

Some time

last night, my darling, as you slept,
i thought i heard you sigh,
and to your little crib i crept,
and watched a space thereby;
then, bending down, i kissed your brow -
for, oh! i love you so -
you are too young to know it now,
but some time you shall know.

some time, when, in a darkened place
where others come to weep,
your eyes shall see a weary face
calm in eternal sleep;
the speechless lips, the wrinkled brow,
the patient smile may show -
you are too young to know it now,
but some time you shall know.

look backward, then, into the years,
and see me here to-night-
see, o my darling! how my tears
are falling as i write;
and feel once more upon your brow
the kiss of long ago -
you are too young to know it now,
but some time you shall know.

-poem by eugene field

Baby, you are too young to know it now,
but some time you shall know,
that I love you so ...
